He is the proud father of three children, Niizhoo, Mani, and Lexie. He currently resides in the Whitefish community with his wife Krysten and their children. is an enrolled member of the Lac Courte Oreilles Ojibwe tribe in northern Wisconsin where he was born and raised. He encourages young singers to stick with it, be original and creative as long as the music is evolving it will always be alive. Day reminds all singers and especially young singers to remember to sing for the right reasons and have fun. When he is not working or traveling the Pow-Wow circuit, Day enjoys spending time with his family, making drums and drum sticks, composing songs, and watching sports. Today, Day makes his home in the Green Bay area of Wisconsin with his companion Josephine and their sons Floyd, Joshuah, Ambrose, and Carmine. Opie Day-Bedeau has been a part of championship crews winning three World-Class Northern Style Championships at the Gathering of Nations, two Schemitzun World Championships in Connecticut, and two International Championships of Song & Dance in Bismarck, North Dakota. The group has released numerous recordings and has become a household name in the Pow-Wow music industry.
Since their creation, Opie and Midnite Express have won just about every major singing competition in the United States and Canada. In 2000, Day and several singers from the Twin Cities formed Midnite Express, an innovative, original-style, intertribal drum group. While singing with Eyabay, Opie had the privilege of winning numerous singing contests throughout North America. After traveling extensively with The Boyz across Indian Country, Day went on to join the Eyabay drum group, a contemporary-style drum based out of Red Lake, Minnesota. Undoubtedly one of the most recognizable voices in Pow-Wow music today, Opie has carried his unique sound and style of singing across the United States and Canada.ĭay first exploded onto the Pow-Wow trail in the early 1990's with The Boyz, an intertribal contemporary-style-singing group based out of the Twin Cities. He has been singing since he was a young boy and enjoys it just as much today as he did then. He is the son of Joseph Bedeau (Leech Lake) and Charlene Day (Bois Forte). Listeners get something like a concert version of "Little Rock Getaway," a "Honeysuckle Rose" that feels a lot like a Joe Sullivan/ Thomas Waller duet, and a whole stack of standards and originals.
Sullivan sounds relaxed and happy to stretch out. Three studies for trio and nine magnificent piano solos were recorded in San Francisco in 1953. There is a fine, relaxed treatment of King Oliver's "West End Blues," with Clarence Williams' lyrics sung by Stella Brooks. Yet Fats Waller devotees everywhere should be notified, as they now have ready access to Waller melodies with titles like "What's Your Name," "Solid Eclipse," "Never Heard of Such Stuff," and "If You Can't Be Good, Be Careful." Classics 1353 also includes a powerful quartet session from December of 1945 with George Wettling, Pops Foster, and the mighty Sidney Bechet. Hardly anybody seems to have noticed this important historical development.

In January of 2004, the Classics Chronological series quietly released all eight of these magnificent trio renderings as part of the continuing saga of Joe Sullivan. It resurfaced years later on Mosaic's The Columbia Jazz Piano Moods Sessions, a limited-edition box set of seven CDs. Issued on a 10" LP entitled Fats Waller First Editions (Epic LG1003), this music soon drifted into obscurity. In June and September of 1952, Joe Sullivan recorded eight versions of songs composed but never recorded by Thomas "Fats" Waller.
